Fall is here, with a little rain and a little sun. As the seasons change, some routines may no longer be as possible, like working out outside or taking long walks.
People commonly feel apprehensive now that fall is here, knowing that winter isn’t far away. You’re reluctantly putting away your sunscreen, sandals, and swimsuits. The days are getting darker, earlier. Most of us just are not ready to let go of summer and come to terms with this change.
One of the things I’ve worked on in the last year that has really freed me, is trying to not complain about the weather. It’s not easy because it seems to be the first thing anyone notices or talks about.
It seems pretty fleeting though to give energy to something that cannot be controlled. It may seem like a small change [to simply accept or embrace the weather], but because you get to practice it daily, these incremental shifts really make meaningful long term changes in your mindset and mood. It frees your mind and energy from being bogged down by external factors like the weather, for much more important things you need to focus on.
This autumn, embrace the change of seasons so that you don’t get those cold weather blues.
Embracing change prevents you from feeling stuck and defeated. Here’s how you can stay motivated in cooler weather and keep up your healthy lifestyle:
(1) Establish a morning routine
A healthy routine can be any ritual that makes you feel happy and peaceful. Every morning, I make a cup of tea and sit down to enjoy it before I start my day. During this ritual, I take a moment to think of 3 things I’m grateful for. Because, why not start your day from a place of joy and love? There’s something very powerful about starting or lifting up your day with positive and affirming thoughts.
(2) Get acclimatized
Beyond weather, learn to be more adaptable in all environments, indoors or out. I love being able to step foot in any venue, for any event, with any type of crowd, and fully own and be present where I am. Try and get out of your ego mind that gives you those self-conscious thoughts about feeling out of place or that you should be elsewhere. Just own it. You’ll enjoy yourself a whole lot more when you do.
(3) Accept change as a challenge
Take the change of seasons as an opportunity for you to refresh your healthy lifestyle strategy. Your lifestyle can always use one anyway, in order to keep things interesting and encouraging. Isn’t it kinda nice that in fall/winter you can establish a fresh healthy routine ,without all the pressures of summer attire and bikini season?
(4) Don’t settle
Know that you’re worth the effort you put in to taking care of your body. Just because a little bad weather may be imminent, don’t be defeated by it enough to give up your routine and what you deserve.
(5) Don’t overthink it
One of my best motivators for getting off my butt and to my healthy habits is to just not overthink it. Oftentimes people talk themselves in and out of doing the things that are good for them. I try to do things like change into my gym clothes before I’ve given myself much time to think about it (i.e. first thing in the morning or as soon as I step foot home after work). Other times I’ll buy or set out healthy ingredients in my kitchen before I’ve figured out what I’m cooking for dinner. That helps me to not have to decide what I’m doing next, saving me from some decision fatigue and brain power.
You’re worth it. You deserve better than letting external factors hold you back or weigh you down. Rise above from being in a place of defeat and do all the things that make you feel good, present, and cared for.
